With over 22 million vehicles registered on the road, India is the largest two-wheeler market in the world. However, EVs account for a small percentage of this segment—making retrofitting existing vehicles with hybrid technology a significant market opportunity. Founded in 2020, Green Tiger Mobility, part of India’s first student-led startup accelerator “Conquest BITS Pilani,” is addressing the challenges of EV adoption by converting conventional two-wheelers into hybrid vehicles and assisting equipment manufacturers develop quality e-mobility products.

Green Tiger Mobility recently developed a robust battery management system (BMS) that employs constant-current/constant-voltage charging while ensuring cell balance and pack initialization. The integrated BMS and battery pack models also enable accurate simulation of real-world discharging scenarios. As a MathWorks Accelerator Program member, Green Tiger Mobility was able to use MATLAB^®, Simulink^®, and Stateflow^® to achieve critical milestones for the BMS project. Crucially, the team also actively engaged MathWorks Consulting Services to achieve a faster time to market.

Green Tiger Mobility tasked the consulting team with developing a passive cell balancing algorithm, which is crucial to improve the efficiency of the system and lifespan optimization of the battery pack. This significantly expedited the startup’s progress by enhancing comprehension of the cell balancing process, allowing the team to select appropriate balancing resistors and determine the discharge currents involved. Beyond this, the consulting team provided Green Tiger Mobility with a structured methodology for developing the battery pack model and aided in parameter estimation and improving pulse discharge testing. With the support of consulting services, the team was able to meet their deadline to complete the BMS. Their solution allows an impressive mileage of 70 kilometers (43.5 miles) on a 1.8 kWh battery.

To further expand its services and venture into areas such as motor control development, Green Tiger Mobility has transitioned into the MathWorks Startup Program, giving it continued low-cost access to numerous MATLAB tools.
